One Woman’s Camino:

Each Step the Promise

of a New Beginning

Author Tracy Pawelski I 3:30 PM

Location: Main Tent

Tracy Pawelski, the former public face and voice of several of the region’s most powerful public and private sector institutions, will speak about walking 500 miles on an ancient pilgrim route called El Camino de Santiago. After rising up the executive ladder in state government and for one of the largest supermarket chains in the country, Pawelski traded in her high heels for hiking boots in 2015. In May 2018, she published her first book “One Woman’s Camino, Each Step the Promise of a New Beginning” which will be available for sale at the event.

Pawelski uses her story about walking 500 miles on Camino to reflect on life’s most meaningful lessons. Crossing the French Pyrenees, she rediscovers the values of trust, resilience, community, and gratitude. During a heat wave on the Meseta –the high, arid plains of northern Spain – she re-learns how to appreciate the universal tenets of simplicity, encouragement, and balance. Each step of the way, she navigates the challenges and rewards of Camino, including the endurance needed to walk 500 miles, the fellow pilgrims she meets, and the internal struggles that come as she searches for answers.

Handpan Musician Shelba Purtle first heard a “hang” (pronounced hung) in 2008 when sitting in a coffee shop, drawn to the soothing hypnotic sound of the mix of melody and rhythm. She became inspired and began her journey of not only playing the handpan, a small spaceship looking instrument, but writing and creating her own distinctive form of handpan music.

“Hang music soothes your soul…” shares Purtle. “Each handpan is a crafted piece of artistry and is made by hand, one-at-a-time. This is what makes them truly special.” Shelba purchased her first handspan made in Bern, Switzerland by the originators. She now has four (two handcrafted in Switzerland, one in Nevada and the fourth from Brazil) and each is designed to create unique sounds from different tone fields, scales and notes. We are excited to hear her music as she shares more about the uniqueness of the handpan. She will also be doing a segment for the children’s portion of the event.
